Meet Delaney Johnson, the founder of  Soil Solutions Consulting, located in Vicksburg, Mississippi, United States. Johnson is a versatile professional who enjoys working indoors and outdoors, including in an office or laboratory, and has high standards for public relations. In Hayneville, Alabama, where he graduated from Hayneville High School in 1979, Johnson grew up on a small farm that produced truck crops, swine, poultry/eggs, and beef. He has always been passionate about nature and the environment, gardening, cooking, and home renovation. With over 35 years of professional experience as a Soil Scientist, Johnson is an authority in soil science and is interested in supporting education, the environment, and science and technology. Johnson provides expert advice in Soil Science, conducts complex studies and analyses, and develops and monitors procedures, guidelines, and policies in the area. As a Soil Scientist and Consultant, Johnson is tasked with developing and implementing program goals and plans, making recommendations, and liaising with other agencies and organizations. He coordinates staff training, conducts field reviews of soil survey areas, and represents his department at meetings and conferences. With a deep understanding of state and federal laws, reporting methods, and the principles and practices of soil science, Johnson is also responsible for assisting with program and administrative activities, formulating policies and procedures, and interpreting complex rules and regulations.

Experience

Delaney Johnson is a Soil Resource and Environmental Consultant at J Squared Enterprises LLC, providing expert land use consulting services for agricultural and urban purposes. He conducts thorough on-site assessments for home sites, sewer, drainage, foundation, and potential development opportunities and offers insightful interpretations. Johnson also provides training and assistance to new Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) employees on soil mapping and surveying. He assists in monitoring soil health and promoting conservation practices. He tracks cooperative agreements and works on special projects such as ecological site descriptions and drone technology data collection.

 

Previously, Johnson worked as a State Soil Scientist with the USDA-NRCS for 12 years, where he was responsible for providing technical soil services to Mississippi. He managed the soils program in the state, coordinated with academic institutions and other conservation partners to implement practices for improving environmental concerns, and served as a project manager for various agreements. Johnson also co-authored proposals on sustainable crop production and soil conservation and managed the acquisition and use of imagery, photography, maps, and geospatial data.

 

From 2000 to 2009, Johnson worked as an Assistant State Soil Scientist with the USDA-NRCS in Jackson, Mississippi. He managed the soil database, conducted special studies for soil correlation, provided technical soil training to internal and external customers, and collected and described soils for sampling, characterization, and analysis. Johnson also coordinated with internal and external partners to update them on soil data changes and guided them using soil information and tools.

 

Before that, Johnson served as a Soil Scientist from 1996 to 2000 in Vicksburg with the Mississippi Delta Regional Wetlands Team. He was responsible for identifying types of wetlands and their hydrologic functions for states along the Mississippi River Delta. Johnson also worked as a Soil Survey Project Leader with the USDA from 1990 to 1996 in Moss Point, MS. While there, he completed soil survey mapping and inventory for Jackson County, Mississippi, encompassing 474,000 acres of the coastal plain, coastal flatwoods, brackish bayou systems, and tidal marshland resource areas.

 

Johnson earned a B.S. in Soil Sciences from Alabama A&M University and an M.S. in Agricultural Sciences with a concentration in Agronomy from Alcorn State University in 2022.

 

Delaney Johnson is a true champion of environmental sciences and has dedicated his life to soil science. He's been actively involved in various activities and societies that have helped him further his work and expertise in the field.

 

As a professional soil classifier, he is a proud member of the Professional Soil Classifiers Association of Mississippi (PSCAM), and he has also been a part of the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) and Agronomy Society of America (ASA). With his extensive knowledge and experience, he has also served on training cadres for soil interpretations, wetland identification, and assessments.

 

Delaney is also an active member of the research project "Nutrient and Water Budget Management Using Novel Sensor Technology," he believes in promoting community outreach programs to meet environmental and social needs. He is an Activities Committee member of the Alabama A&M University Alumni Chapter. He has actively encouraged interest in higher education and environmental sciences research among grade schools in Mississippi.

 

In addition to all these accomplishments, Delaney has also served as the past President and Recruitment Committee member of Mississippi's Alabama A&M University Alumni Chapter from 2016 to 2020. With his unwavering dedication and passion for environmental sciences, Delaney Johnson inspires us all.
